An awareness programme was conducted as part of the Jaffna District Ayurveda Conservation Council in alignment with the National Ayurveda Conservation Council Empowerment Programme. This initiative aims to preserve traditional medicine and enhance the livelihoods of Traditional Medicine Practitioners. The programme took place on February 13–14, 2025, at the Jaffna Atchuveli Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Unit and the Atchuveli Herbal Garden premises, followed by another session on February 15, 2025, at the Mannar Town Divisional Secretariat, with the active participation of hereditary medicine practitioners.
The participants were educated on various aspects of Traditional Medicine, including: ensuring the safety and quality of Ayurveda medicines, identifying correct ingredients and substitutes required for the medicine preparation, understanding legal and technical requirements related to the cultivation and harvesting of medicinal plants, and effective maintenance of herbal gardens for sustainable Ayurveda practice.
Additionally, a discussion was held with institutional heads at the Kilinochchi Kalmadunagara Herbal Garden, focusing on the effective cultivation of medicinal plants required for local medicine production in the Northern Province. Another discussion was held at the Provincial Ministry of Health of the Northern Province, exploring ways to expand shared care services to the public and promote a healthier society. Future plans were also discusseded, with the participation of key officials, including the Provincial Health Secretary, Provincial Director of Health Services, and Director (Development) of the Indigenous Medicine Section.
